At the end of a very disjointed 2020 cricket season, it became clear that the club would be losing a number of senior players for the forthcoming year.
After considerable thought it was considered necessary to withdraw one of the Senior teams from the Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket League - in effect, we needed to take an apparent backward step to safeguard the Club's future. This will allow the the Club to regroup and grow again. The senior side will play in Division 7W.
This change only affects the Saturday league side and the Juniors and Ladies set-ups are completely unaffected, and will hopefully continue to grow. There is also an intention to play more Sunday friendly games than we have done in recent years - our aim is to give anybody who wants to play cricket the opportunity to do so.
It is very pleasing that in my conversations with players there has been a real understanding of the Club's position, with most being very supportive of the decision. Most have pledged to stay with the Club, for which I am immensely thankful. Martin Staley (Stella) has offered to captain the side, but is happy to step aside if there is anybody else who wants to take on this responsibility. Please feel free to ring me on 07770 691934 if you would like to discuss this further.
This decision was not taken lightly, and it should not be considered a wholly negative matter. It provides necessary breathing space in the short-term which will hopefully lead to a long-term positive impact. Personally I am more positive about the future of the Club than I have been for the last 18 months, and hope that you feel the same.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible over the course of the 2021 season - including perhaps even being able to have a drink together before too long!
